Match Play Rules
3rd Annual Scott Crowley Memorial Match Play Tournament
General Info:
- Tournament will begin the week of September 6-10
- Matches will be played weekly. There will be tee times available on Wednesday morning for the SL League and Friday morning for the Northern league. However, if those times won’t work then it will be your responsibility to schedule a separate time/course with your opponent or forfeit the match. I need to know in advance if you will be playing at a different time so I can make sure to fulfill my obligations with the courses.
- This will be a double-elimination tournament, so everyone is guaranteed at least two matches
- If you get eliminated from the tournament, please feel free to continue golfing with us each week. Just let me know so I make sure to reserve enough spots at the course.
Tournament Rules:
I’m sure I’ve missed something (or several things), but this should at least get us going. Have fun out there and hit ‘em straight.

Tournament Rules:
- Have fun and treat each other with respect!
- No Out of bounds or lost balls. If you hit a ball OB or lose a ball decide with your opponent where to drop the ball, take a one stroke penalty, and hit from there.
- Max score on any hole is 8, unless a score higher than 8 will win the hole.
- Each hole will be worth one point, so nine points total for the round. A golfer will win the match once he/she has earned 5 points. If opponents tie on a given hole, each player is awarded a half point for that hole. There are no carryovers.
- This is a “Net Score” tournament, so handicaps will be applied as follows: Opponents will compare handicaps before the round. The higher handicap will be given the same number of strokes as the difference in the two handicaps. For example if one golfer has a 5 handicap and the other has a 12, the golfer with the 12 handicap will be given 7 strokes in the match. The strokes will be applied to the most difficult holes on the course, as defined by the scorecards. So, on the seven most difficult holes, the golfer with the 12 handicap will be given one stroke per hole. For example, if on the most difficult hole, the golfer with the 12 handicap shoots a 6 and the golfer with the 5 handicap shoots a 5, the 12-handicapper would subtract one stroke from his/her score for a “net score” of 5, and the two would tie the hole resulting in a half point each. On the two easiest holes, the two golfers will play “straight up,” which means no strokes are given.
- Only an opponent can give you a putt or a hole. Remember, this is a competition, so don’t just pick up your ball, or you will forfeit the hole. Don’t be upset if your opponent makes you putt out, that’s how golf is really played…just sayin’. 😊 On the flip side, don’t be a jerk and make your opponent putt out the six inchers. 😊 Even I don’t miss those.
- Both opponents should keep track of each other’s shots and make sure you agree on the scores before you finalize the hole. If there is a discrepancy, please discuss with the other players in your group. And, big picture, don’t worry too much about it. Even if you win your match, you are still several steps away from joining the tour, so calm down. 😊
I’m sure I’ve missed something (or several things), but this should at least get us going. Have fun out there and hit ‘em straight.
